The Metaverse We Can Build Ourselves

I read Ready Player One a few years ago and loved it. Of course I never wanted the society in it, nor the virtual world OASIS, to become reality. But here we are, and in many ways it looks like we're headed that way.

You know what I thought was really cool about OASIS though? So many worlds. So. Many. Worlds. People could buy or rent real estate and just put up their own planet with their own rules, tools, treasures, and mechanics. On some worlds there was no PvP fighting. On others magic didn't work. If I recall correctly.

Anyway, the point is that everyone could have their own little corner in a huge universe. Kinnda like a distributed or federated MUD/MUSH. You know; the kind of virtual world that is accessible to anyone for hardly any money at all and without motion sickness.

That'd be pretty cool.
